Hello ComBappers:

It's time, once again, to give a "high five" to our hard working members of society.  Yes, it's Labour Day and, aside from being a great weekend for football, it's a time to think about the value of work and the issues around safe and meaningful work.

The Bible is quite clear on this: work is beneficial both to the worker and to society.  Regardless of your job (aside from something illegal), there is God given value in what you are doing.  In the little picture, you are earning money to feed/clothe/house yourself (and others).  In the big picture, you are benefiting society by helping the economy and paying taxes (so that we can see the doctor without going broke... or are able to drive down a paved road...or are helping the less fortunate of the country).

Of course, back a hundred years or so, bosses/owners took advantage of workers, exploiting them simply as a resource to be used up, which spawned the labour movement and unions.  Frankly, that was a wonderful progressive step.

Today, some would say that some unions now have too much power... but that's a debate for another day.  We do need to be thankful for the work done to make the working man/woman able to perform their duties in a just environment.

Work rules! :)

Hello ComBappers:

Our buddies, the scientists, are continuing to come up with really neat discoveries that are not only pointing to a creator, but are constantly proving the historical records of the Bible.  I've talked about how archaeology has, time and time again, confirmed the geographical details of the Bible (i.e., towns, locations, political leaders, etc.).  Now, geneticists are discovering that "Eve" is older than "Adam".

Oh, wait a minute!  What?

Well, it turns out that, through the discovering and mapping of DNA, you can backtrace who's related to who by the different markers that we all have in our DNA.  As they have being doing this, they have come to the conclusion that all of us come from one female ancestor.  They call her "mitochondrial Eve".   However, as they backtrack the male line... they come up with a noticeably younger date, meaning, the "Adam" that we all descend from came along much later than "Eve".  Now, on the surface, this is puzzling unless you read your Bible.  It turns out that "Adam" is actually Noah!   The Bible clearly states that Noah and his four sons were the only males that survived the flood.  However, each of the sons had a wife who each came from different mothers (probably). Therefore, the female lineage would continue back to the real Eve... but the male lineage would "bottleneck" at Noah.

Now, how could the writers of the Bible (in this case Moses) not only know the universe came into existence out of nothing (the Big Bang) but also know that we humans came about from Adam and Eve, bottlenecking through Noah?   This information would have been impossible for a writer to make up...and then just happen to be found to be accurate thousands of years later, unless it were coming from God himself.

So very cool.  Read more about it here: http://www.reasons.org/blogs/take-two/happy-mothersdna

Hello ComBappers:

Camp time!!   WOO HOO!  Yes, everyone's favourite time of year... our annual Church Camp, is here (OK, on Thursday).  We are very excited to have Maurice Gillard as our speaker.  We've looked past his love for the Montreal Canadians ... and the Toronto Argonauts.... and have invited him to join us.  You'll enjoy his quick hit and his "no nonsense" messages!  :)  Moe is particularly talented at assigning nicknames.  So, if you have never had one... or don't like the one you have now... ask Moe to come up with one for you.

Baptism and Belonging class is next week!   If you've never been baptized (as a believer... in other words you "chose" to do it because you had committed your life to Jesus) or if you are yet to officially become a member of the church... or both!!!... then join us on Wednesday night.  Just let us know so we can have the material you need in advance.

Hello ComBappers:

We had a wonderful trip to the smallest state (population wise) in the United States of America (aka our neighbours to the south) to visit with Michelle's sister and her family.  Lander, Wyoming is 10 hours straight south of us, and the landscape around there resembles what you'd see in the Kamloops region of BC.  Nothing really grows there except sagebrush and some random weeds. In fact, as we drove home I realized that, apart from some small areas that had irrigation, there are no crops at all   Huge tracts of ranch land but no dry land farming until you get back into Saskatchewan.  It kinda felt like we had come from the desert into the bread basket.

At Admiral camp I was chatting with some the gang there and tried to figure out how many people Saskatchewan feeds in a year.  Just looking at wheat... Saskatchewan produces 5% of the world's wheat (41% of Canada's) while we have about a million people in the province and 6 billion people in the world... which makes us only .017% of the world's population!  So, just taking wheat (not including all other crops, meat, and dairy products), we feed 20 million people (that according to the Wheat Board which estimates our output at 10 million tonnes and then assuming that each person consumes 1,000 pounds of food in a year).  When we factor in other crops, meat, dairy, poultry, and prairie oysters, we can easily triple the output and safely say that we feed, get this, 60 million people! (By the way, if anyone can actually come up with some real figures on this topic... I'd love to see them.... I'm just grasping at straws here.)

So, give yourself a pat on the back!   We feed a lot of people here in lowly Saskatchewan!  Oh, and give a farmer a hug and say thanks for the millions of people we feed every year!
