Combap Update ![]() Bringing People into the Caring Community of Christ
March 3, 2010 Hello ComBappers:Ah, the sweet sweet smell of victory. The Olympics came home all wrapped up in a bow when Sidney Crosby took a sweet pass from Jarome Iginla and scored the overtime winner to win the gold medal hockey game on Sunday. However, only after a one day break, Sydney, and most of the other NHL Olympians, were back to their regular job (for which they get paid in the millions). The glory is gone. The Olympics are history. Life goes on.
It's nice to have good memories. It's nice to remember. However, this world doesn't stand still and let us live there for more than a fleeting moment. The same goes for bad memories too. The moments are gone... but memories remain. Some say that the only thing worse than having bad memories is having no memories at all. Many of us know people who have, sadly, lost their ability to remember, which leads to confusion and frustration. It's not the way it should be. So, cherish your good and your bad memories. Let the good ones bring you a reminder of the joy you felt. Let the bad ones remind you that God is in control and that we can trust him. Thanks (God) for the memories. Talking nonsense is the sole privilege mankind possesses over the other organisms. It's by talking nonsense that one gets to the truth! I talk nonsense, therefore I'm human. ~ Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment
Blast from the past - Marilyn H. Missions:We featured Rebecca Alward in Sunday's bulletin. Check out her blog at http://alwardbound.blogspot.com. Here is her posting from March 1. Yesterday, Team Bolivia gathered at the Whittles with the STM led by Blair Clark from CBM to watch Canada go for gold...it was a great time of being together, laughing, and sharing in the tension and anxiety of wondering what the outcome would be :) Duane (Guthrie) also invited our friends, the Collins, to join us who are from Oregon, USA. They were very brave and took our ribbing well...you gotta love friendship!" 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Penny's Poll(s):Year-end donation receipts are out. Funny:A Latin American minister was touring the U.S. in an effort to boost financial support for missionaries and ministries in his home country. At a church luncheon, he was telling the guests about this home country, his family, and the important work being supported there. As he concluded, he said, "And I have a charming and understanding wife but, alas, no children." After a pause, he said, haltingly, "You see, my wife is unbearable." Puzzled glances in the audience prompted him to try to clarify by saying: "What I mean is, my wife is inconceivable." Observing the laughter in the audience, he realized his mistake, but floundered deeper into the intricacies of the English language by correcting triumphantly, "That is, my wife, she is impregnable!" Devotional:"They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.' " (Acts 1:10-11) You almost feel bad for the disciples. They're always playing catch-up to whatever Jesus is talking about or doing, right up to the very end. He tells them not to leave Jerusalem. He says the Holy Spirit will come on them and give them power. He says they will be His witnesses everywhere. Then He flies up into a cloud! Then some angels show up and say, "Why are you looking at that cloud?" Because Jesus just disappeared into it, that's why! But Jesus knew they needed more answers: So He sent these two angels to fill in the gaps. To let them know He was gone to heaven. And to let them know He's coming back in the same way someday. To let them know the story isn't over, yet. What now? Use the power of the Holy Spirit to be Jesus' witness in this world. And keep watching the sky, getting prepared, waiting for Him to come back and make everything right once and for all. Think: Do you have an expectation that Jesus could come back "in the same way" at any moment? If you did, how would that change the way you live today? Pray: Thank God that Jesus is coming back someday. Ask Him to help you to live like it could be today. Do: Read on in Acts for the wild, amazing story of the early days of the Christian church.
