Hello ComBappers:

Greetings in the name of the Lord!   This week's edition of the ComBap Update has many more videos than normal, but they are all good!Kinetoscope   Video has become such an important part of our lives in the 21st Century.  The majority of all internet web traffic is bytes from videos (both the legal and the illegal kind).  People love sharing funny/cute/inspirational/shocking/creative videos with their friends and family.

Motion pictures (what we call videos today) were first used in 1867 (Canada's birthday!) with a machine called a zoopraxiscope which was really just a glorified picture flip book on a wheel.   It wasn't until Edison invented the Kinetoscope (for one person to watch a motion picture) in 1889, and then the Vitascope (for theatre audiences) in 1894. Motion pictures remained a communal event until the invention of the personal movie camera in the 50's (which only very few could afford) and then the video tape cameras of the Earlycamcorder70's (which a few more could afford) to the analog camcorders in the 90's (which many more people could afford... which included me when I bought an 8mm RCA video camera to record our kids) to, finally, the digital camcorders that are built in to almost every phone on the planet!   Today, I can grab my phone, record a video, and upload it to the internet and have people from all over the world watch it... all within minutes.

Most of us don't have videos of us when we are kids.  Thankfully, my Uncle Stan had bought an 8mm film camera and recorded us a few times when I was young.  My kids have hundreds of hours of themselves to watch.  Sometimes I will catch them watching those old videos on the computer (all of our videos have been digitized and are now on our computer).  They love watching what they were like when they were little...and I love it too!  It's great to be able to see how they have grown and how they used to crawl/walk/talk/laugh/sing!  Sure, we have photos too... but video captures the action and the audio, and can remind us of some on the nuances that we had forgotten. (Try this one of Dusty in his Grandparents' back yard - youtube.com)

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a video of how I've grown spiritually over the years.  Granted... it's a bit difficult to capture this on film (er... on digital memory sticks).  Have we changed in our Christian walk or are we still crawling?  Has our speech become more "seasoned with salt" or is it still salty?  Are we laughing more?  Singing with more meaning and purer worship?  More graceful.. and gracious?

I sure hope so!!

In Christ

PS.  Need to get your videos off of tape and on to the computer? Ask me how!  It's important to get them backed up!

*How Many Dogs Does It Take To Change A Light Bulb?*

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned-out light bulb?
Border Collie: Just one. And I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
Dachshund: I can't reach the stupid lamp!
Toy Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
Rottweiler: Go Ahead! Make me!
Shi-tzu: Puh-leeze, dah-ling. Let the servants. . . .
Lab: Oh, me, me!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I?
Malamute: Let the Border collie do it.. You can feed me while he's busy.
Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Doberman Pinscher: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.
Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.
Hound Dog: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.
Pointer: I see it, there it is, right there...
Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
Australian Shepherd: Put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

Devotional:

Bigger Grace: The Same Sosthenes?

"Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes." (1 Corinthians 1:1)

We're trying to wrap our minds around the huge idea of grace this week and starting with Paul's pen man for his letter to the Christians in Corinth. Scholars guess this might be the same guy -- with the same name -- who dragged Paul in front of a Roman court in Corinth in Acts 18 trying to get him jailed or killed for converting so many people to Christianity.

That Sosthenes was the Jewish "synagogue ruler" who had his case thrown out by the Roman judge and then got beat up by an angry Gentile mob of people who hated the Jews. That's the last we hear of him, lying beaten on the street while Paul goes back to spreading the good news about Jesus.

Then this verse quite a while later. What an amazing story if this is the same guy. It would mean that, like the synagogue leader in Corinth before him, Sosthenes also believed in Jesus, putting all of his hope in the grace and forgiveness of God instead of following the Law -- and went to work with the same apostle he tried to get arrested.

God's grace works like that, converting enemies into family members, granting the highest privileges to the worst of sinners, offering forgiveness in exchange for simple belief. Stay tuned.

Think: Do you know anyone who lived the worst kind of life -- even hating God -- before finally coming to faith in Christ and the promise of heaven? Does that bother you or excite you?

Pray: Ask God to help you to better understand His grace this week.

Do: Read the whole story of Paul and then Sosthenes in Acts 18:1-17.
